James “Whitey” Bulger’s girlfriend indicted by federal grand jury

James “Whitey” Bulger’s long-time girlfriend Catherine Greig was indicted today by a federal grand jury on a charge of conspiracy to harbor and conceal a fugitive, federal prosecutors said.

Greig, 60, of Quincy allegedly conspired with Bulger, a fearsome Boston gang leader who is charged in connection with 19 murders, and others to harbor and conceal Bulger, who went on the lam from law enforcement in 1995.

“It is alleged that Greig conspired to take steps to prevent Bulger’s discovery and arrest, after knowledge of the fact that a warrant had been issued for his apprehension,” the US attorney’s office said in a joint statement with federal and state law enforcement agencies.

The indictment replaces the criminal complaint that law enforcement originally used to charge her.

The document listed a number of aliases for Greig, who was arrested along with the 81-year-old Bulger in Santa Monica, Calif., in late June. Her aliases included Carol Gasko, Carol Gasco, Helen Marhall, Carol Shapeton, and Mrs. Thomas Baxter, the statement said.

If convicted, she faces up to five years in prison, with three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine.
