"Teresa Halbach's life was taken": Steven Avery to be Charged

Steven Avery will be charged next week with first-degree intentional homicide for the death of Teresa Halbach. Special prosecutor Ken Kratz made that announcement Friday afternoon.

Kratz said investigators believe "Teresa Halbach's life was taken" the afternoon of October 31st.

Avery was publicly identified last week as the last person to see Halbach alive. Avery told reporters she came to photograph a van he was selling in Auto Trader magazine, as she had many times before, then left.

Kratz said Halbach stated on videotape during questioning that he was never in Halbach's vehicle, but "significant DNA evidence -- [Steven Avery's] blood -- was found in the interior of Ms. Halbach's vehicle" in no fewer than four places, the district attorney said.

He also said DNA was found on other evidence around the Avery property including the key that started Halbach's SUV, which was found in Avery's bedroom. Kratz clarified that the key had been hidden in the room.

Kratz said there are several theories how Halbach was killed but authorities are waiting for more testing of evidence. Still, he said, there is "No question, at least in my mind, who is responsible for the death of Teresa Halbach."

He went on to refute claims made by the Avery family of a set-up. He said Halbach's vehicle was left untouched after it was found last Saturday, sealed, and shipped to the State Crime Lab, and no one went into the interior of the vehicle until it reached the crime lab. He also called it ludicrous to believe anyone was walking around with containers of Avery's DNA to plant on evidence.

Sheriff Jerry Pagel said investigators left "no stone left unturned" in their search for Teresa Halbach on the Avery Auto Salvage property, hoping to find her alive. He said they searched every single vehicle, opening the trunks of thousands of vehicles, in hopes of finding her.

"We feel we have now found her," Pagel said, referring to burned remains found around the Avery property.
