Teresa Halbach investigation to expand
MISHICOT - Evidence found in five days of searching for Teresa Halbach has led police to expand their investigation.
"The scope of the investigation has gone from a missing person to being concerned about the welfare of Teresa Halbach," Calumet County Sheriff Jerry Pagel said at a press conference Tuesday.
Pagel would not disclose what evidence has led authorities to the conclusion. He said he remains optimistic that Halbach may be found alive.
The 25-year-old rural St. Johns woman disappeared Oct. 31 while taking freelance photographs for an auto magazine. Her sport utility vehicle was found Saturday in a Manitowoc County salvage yard owned by the family of Steven Avery. Avery was released from prison in 2003 after serving 18 years for sexual assault. He was released after he was cleared by DNA evidence.
The sheriff refused to describe Avery as a suspect, and said he and his family have been cooperating in the investigation.
While Pagel and other officials have not said if Halbach’s last appointment was to photograph a vehicle Avery had for sale, he said investigators are "closing in" on determining her activities on Oct. 31.
Pagel has said this week that investigators would not discuss the times and places of Halbach’s Oct. 31 appointments, but he said Tuesday that she had three scheduled appointments the day she disappeared - one in Kiel, which is in both Calumet and Manitowoc counties, and two others in Manitowoc County.
Pagel said evidence recovered so far includes DNA evidence. He said he hopes "in 24 or 48 hours we have better answers."
