Sex offender accused of molesting 5 kids

PORTAGE -- A Portage woman, despite knowing family friend Ricky Lee Schultz was a convicted sex offender, let him play with five children at her home, Portage police said.

Police said Schultz molested all five children in one night.

Schultz, 48, of South Holland, Illinois, was charged Monday with five counts of child molestation. He faces up to 40 years in prison if convicted.

Portage Detective Sgt. Roger Peele, who investigated the case, said in court document that Schultz has three previous convictions for sex offenses, all in Illinois. Schultz was convicted of indecent liberties with a child in 1982 and aggravated criminal sexual abuse in 1986 and 1992.

Despite knowing Schultz was a sex offender, the Portage woman allowed Schultz to stay at her home from June 30 to July 3 because Schultz explained he was wrongly accused and convicted, the detective said.

"The mother indicated she believed him because he was a close friend and she had never observed anything out of the ordinary," the detective said in court documents.

Schultz was allowed to play with the Portage woman's three children -- two girls and a boy -- in the home's "toy room" on July 1. Two visiting children were also in the room. The woman said the children were checked a few times and appeared fine.

But police said Schultz fondled the genitals of all five children, all of whom are younger than 14 years old. The Portage woman said the fondling came to light about two days later, according to police. Portage police said they spoke to four of the children and they stated they were fondled. One child said Schultz told her not to tell anyone, while another child stated Schultz offered to pay her but didn't give her money.

Police said Schultz said the children fabricated the reports of fondling.
