Girl Scout troop leader arrested on child molestation counts
LA MESA – Police arrested a Girl Scout troop leader early yesterday after a girl, now 12, said he fondled her during a sleepover at his house two years ago, investigators said.
James William Wallace, 42, surrendered to deputies at his home on Malorey Street about 7:15 a.m. and was jailed on two counts of felony child molestation, La Mesa police Lt. Allen White said.
Wallace and his wife, who have a daughter, have been volunteer troop leaders for several years, said Mary Doyle, a spokeswoman for the Girl Scouts in San Diego.
The 12-year-old girl told her parents about the alleged incident Oct. 23 and the family contacted police Monday, White said.
According to the girl, Wallace entered a bedroom where she was sleeping, removed her pants and fondled her twice during the night of Sept. 23, 2003.
Police said there were no indications that there were other alleged victims.
White refused to reveal specific evidence collected in the case or whether there were witnesses. He said it was not uncommon for such crimes to go unreported for years.
A spokeswoman for the Girl Scouts said James Wallace's membership to the organization had been suspended. She also said that it has never had a complaint of any kind against Wallace or his wife.
A new adult volunteer was appointed to lead the troop, Doyle said.
