Middle school teacher accused of sex with girl

GREEN BAY, Wis. - A teacher at Wrightstown Middle School was accused Tuesday of repeatedly sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl who had been one of his students.

Stephen Sherman, 28, of Kaukauna, was charged in Brown County Circuit Court with repeated sexual assault of the same child, carrying up to 40 years in prison and a $100,000 fine.

The criminal complaint quoted the girl as saying Sherman was one of her teachers in sixth grade but he became a family friend once her stepfather had moved from the house, and he started spending more time at her home.

She told investigators that starting in January he began making sexual advances, which escalated into sexual acts at his house and her house, the complaint said.

According to the complaint, Sherman told authorities he had hugged and kissed the girl and fantasized about having sex with her but never acted on the fantasies, although he admitted telephoning her daily and on one occasion calling her as many as 10 times in one day.

Sherman's initial appearance in court Tuesday was via teleconference from Brown County Jail.

Court Commissioner Lawrence Gazeley scheduled the remainder of his initial appearance Thursday and ordered that he remain held in lieu of $20,000 cash bond.
