Man Close to Miller Case Charged with Child Porn
Cedar Rapids -- The fiance of Evelyn Miller's mother pleaded not guilty Friday to federal charges of possessing child pornography. 26-year-old Casey Frederiksen was arrested by U.S. Postal inspectors Thursday night in New Hampton. He entered a plea in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids on a single charge.
Floyd County Attorney Marily Dettmer issued a statement Friday saying "the child pornography case and the murder investigation are two completely separate cases." However, Dettmer added there is some overlap because some of the facts and the people involved are connected.
Frederiksen was at home with five-year-old Evelyn Miller in Floyd County the night she disappeared. Her mother, Noel Miller, called police to report her daughter missing after Miller returned home from an overnight work shift. The federal child porn charge resulted from what investigators found while searching for the murdered Floyd County girl.
Frederiksen, and his fiance Noel Miller, tried to dispel rumors that authorities found child porn on a computer seized during the search in July. On September 15th, Frederiksen told TV9 that "there's nothing in it except for Evelyn's pictures, there's nothing even related to Evelyn on it...maybe a few kid games on it too." He insisted there was nothing illegal on the family's computer.
Evelyn's mother testified before a federal grant jury in Cedar Rapids on Thursday...but would not provide details of her testimony.
Frederiksen's family issued a statement of support. His sister, Brandi Hoffmann, says the family will "...urge the public to remember than an indictment is simply an allegation, not proof of wrongdoing. We have no reason to believe that Casey is responsible for Evelyn's death or that Evelyn was the subject of the pornography in question."
Frederiksen could face up to ten years in prison if convicted of federal child porn charges. He'll return to federal court Monday for a hearing to see if he can get out of jail pending a trial.
Authorities emphasized again that they've named no one as a suspect in the death of Evelyn Miller.
