Couey's Trial Moved Back 4 ½ Months
The trial date for the man accused of killing Jessica Lunsford has been moved back 4 ½ months.
John Couey allegedly confessed to kidnapping, raping and killing Lunsford earlier this year.
A judge granted a defense motion Thursday to move the trial from February to July 10. Defense attorneys said it is a complicated case and will take many months to prepare.
The trial is expected to last three weeks.
Meanwhile, newly released documents show Couey, a registered sex offender, pleaded with a detective not to send him to prison because he claimed it would not help him. Couey reportedly told the detective that he was confessing to the crime because he wanted help.
He's pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder for Lunsford's death. Authorities said Couey admitted to the crime in March, the day after he was arrested in Augusta, Ga.
Lunsford was found March 19, buried with her stuffed dolphin behind the mobile home across the street from her house. She had been kidnapped from her bedroom three weeks earlier. The day before her body was found, Couey told investigators where to look.
