wanted suspects and sex offenders
MONROE - The Ouachita Parish sheriff is going to court in an attempt to force the American Red Cross to turn over the names of one-thousand refugees in a Monroe hurricane shelter so authorities can check for wanted suspects and sex offenders.
Sheriff Richard Fewell, who plans to file the suit later today in state district court, said the Red Cross has denied access to the names. Two weeks ago, a Red Cross volunteer who is a convicted killer was arrested at the Monroe Civic Center shelter on allegations of indecent behavior with hurricane refugees.
Red Cross spokesman Dan Hartman says the organization already runs background checks on its official volunteers. The man arrested was an unofficial volunteer. Hartman says the organization's national policies prevent them from releasing the names.
Hartman says while the Red Cross supports making the shelter a safe environment, the agency will not change its privacy policy to allow law enforcement to check evacuee's backgrounds.
