Parents in shelters cautioned about sexual predators
In response to more than one confirmed case of child sexual abuse occurring in hurricane evacuee shelters across the state, Prevent Child Abuse (PCA) Louisiana is creating materials about sexual abuse prevention to distribute to the parents in the these facilities.
PCA Louisiana staff are also available to train the volunteers working in the shelters on how to recognize the signs and symptoms of child maltreatment, as well as how to report suspected abuse or neglect.
"We have no idea how long these families will need to take refuge in our shelters, and we want the children housed in these facilities to be safe. We encourage parents to not let their children go off alone in any part of the shelter, and to always know where their children are even if they are participating in activities inside or outside the building," said Anna Fogle, president and CEO of the non-profit organization.
PCA Louisiana is also looking into ways to add security in the shelters to specifically protect the children and to provide respite for the parents.
