Sexual assault victim testifies in court
CORPUS CHRISTI - A man who confessed to sexually abusing a young girl for a decade had to listen to her testimony in court Monday. When 42-year old Ricardo Zamora appeared in court Monday for the start of his trial on child molesting charges - he pleaded guilty to all 12 counts against him. When the punishment phase of the trial got underway Monday afternoon, attention was focused on the victim's testimony and about the abuse she suffered.
Ricardo Zamora and the victim's mother began dating in New York when the victim was six and by her account there were no problems at first.
"At that time I had no father figure, so basically all I wanted was someone I could call daddy," the victim said. After two years, the abuse started with inappropriate touching and eventually moving to sex acts and intercourse. The victim says when her mother found out about the abuse, she did nothing to stop it.
"I know she never tried to do anything to take not just me, but me and her, us, out of the situation." The three moved from New York to Nueces County in 1998. In 2000, the victim's mother died of cancer and the relationship between the victim and Zamora changed again.
"After my mother passed away, things gradually got worse. He would make me sleep in the same bed and start living in the same bed and do all the chores...that a housewife would do." Twice Zamora got the victim pregnant. She had a miscarriage, and then gave birth to a little girl a year and a half ago, but earlier this year, at age 18, the victim finally overcame her fear and went to authorities.
"I was tired of suffering...tired of living that life every day. Scared for my safety...Scared for my daughter."
Zamora is now facing up to 99 years in prison.
