Man charged in sex case

GREAT FALLS - A city resident faces seven charges of sexual activity with girls as young as 7.

Jimmy Carpenter, 44, who previously lived in Cascade, appeared in Justice Court last week on two counts of rape, three counts of sexual abuse of children and two other felony sex abuse charges. He remained in jail on $500,000 bail pending another court appearance Sept. 2.

"I can't think of a more serious offense than this," said Cascade County Attorney Brant Light. Detective John Schaffer described the case as a "bad one."

Officials said hundreds, possibly thousands, of pornographic images were confiscated from Carpenter's residence, some allegedly showing him performing sexual acts with children.

The Department of Public Health and Human Services notified police Aug. 8 of an alleged sexual assault on a Great Falls 4-year-old. Subsequently, a teenage girl accompanying the child during an interview told authorities she had observed pornography when visiting Carpenter's residence.

Armed with a warrant, police searched Carpenter's house Wednesday and confiscated a computer hard drive, 83 compact discs and two cameras.
