Sex-abuse scandal
As a lifelong Massachusetts resident, I am offended by Sen. Rick Santorum's comments implying that the "liberal culture" of Boston somehow is responsible for the Catholic Church's sexual abuse scandal. Not only are his remarks divisive and unbefitting a member of Congress, they are just plain wrong.
Incidents of sexual abuse by members of the clergy have been reported in many states and countries. The magnitude of the abuse was reported extensively here in Boston because prosecutors were diligent in investigating the crimes. The abuse was widespread and spanned several decades - primarily because Cardinal Bernard Law, head of the archdiocese, chose to continually transfer sexual predators from parish to parish for years, ignoring the complaints of the families of victims whose lives these predators were harming.
It was the culture of the church's hierarchy, which sent a message to its priests that they were above the law, that really is to blame.
