Romulus man faces rape charges
A Seneca County man faces charges he had sexual relations with a 15-year-old Tennessee girl he met over the Internet and brought to a Cayuga County cottage, state police said.
Joseph F. Greene, 23, of 5596 Tipperay St., Romulus, was found with the girl by state police Wednesday at a cottage his grandmother owns on Atwater Road in Genoa, police said. He has been charged with third-degree rape, third-degree criminal sex act and endangering the welfare of a child.
The girl had her mother's permission to travel with Greene, but the girl's aunt called Tennessee authorities, who contacted New York state police.
The girl's mother was arrested by Tennessee authorities on charges related to permitting her minor daughter to leave with an older man.
"Her mother was aware of Mr. Greene's age and let her go with him. The mother was arrested by authorities for statutory rape and child abuse," state police investigator Joel Pinker said.
The girl is in the process of being transferred back to Tennessee, Pinker said.
After Greene met the girl over the Internet, he first traveled to Tennessee in mid-June, met the girl and her family, and started his sexual relationship with her then, Pinker said.
On July 10, Green picked her up to bring her to New York, continued the consensual sexual relationship before leaving Tennessee, and brought her to his grandmother's cottage, where they lived for a week before authorities found them, police said.
On Friday, Greene was arraigned in Romulus Town Court in Seneca County for third-degree criminal sex act, involving time that Greene and the girl spent at Greene's parents' home in Seneca County, police said.
Greene - who had posted bail in Cayuga County, meeting a $10,000 cash, $20,000 bond level - was released on his own recognizance through a pre-trial release program in Seneca County.
Greene also has charges pending in Tennessee, and police said the Federal Bureau of Investigation will be contacted because Greene could face charges under the Mann Act, which makes it a crime for someone to transport an individual across state borders for illegal sexual behavior.
