Stepfather in fatal fire case to remain in custody

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- The stepfather of a girl charged with setting a fire that killed two children will remain in jail pending his trial for sexual exploitation of children and possession child pornography.

Brian Street, 39, of Griswold, sought to be released from custody Friday to live with a family member in Omaha, Neb.

U.S. District Judge Ross Walters sided with prosecutors, however, and said Street needed to remain in custody "to protect the children in the district."

Street faces up to 60 years in prison if convicted at his trial scheduled for June.

He was charged in April in U.S. District Court in Des Moines with one count of sexual exploitation of children and one count of possession of child pornography.

Prosecutors claim he sexually abused his stepdaughter 17-year-old Tracey Dyess, who faces two murder charges for setting a fire to her family's home March 31. She told investigators she wanted to kill Street.

Instead, her 13-year-old sister, Jessica, and her nephew Kaleb Dyess, 6, died.

Federal authorities said Friday that letters found in the burned house refers to street's sexual abuse of other children.

A federal investigator said pictures found in a safe in the home depicted sexual acts between Dyess and Street.
