What Should You Do if You Suspect Child Abuse? Website Offers Guidance to the Public
April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. Helpguide.org offers information and resources for identifying the signs of child abuse and what you can do to help prevent it.
Santa Monica, CA - April 20, 2005 – Child abuse takes many different forms — physical, sexual, emotional, neglect, and child exploitation. Unfortunately, its prevalence may be more common than you think. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recently released statistics indicating that about 12.4 out of every 1,000 children were victims of abuse or neglect in 2003.
In many states, it is required by law for all citizens to report suspected abuse; however, many people do not know where to report it. To receive immediate guidance and help when you suspect child abuse, call the Childhelp USA National Child Abuse Hotline: 1-800-4-A-CHILD (1-800-422-4453). The National Child Abuse Hotline will give you the local agency for you to call to report the incident.
You probably will be relieved to know that:
- If you report child abuse, the authorities will investigate to find out if your suspicions are correct. If child abuse is confirmed, the family will generally receive counseling, parenting or other assistance to provide ongoing safety. The child may be placed in safe care outside of the home while the family situation is stabilized.
- You do not have to give your name when you report child abuse, in most states.
- The child abuser cannot find out who made the report.
Remember that suspected abuse is sufficient reason to make a report to authorities. You do not need proof. Your call may make the difference in the life of a child – and may even save the child"s life.
