Man Charged With Sexually Assaulting 8-Year-Old Boy
Boy Says Mother Videotaped Incident
LAUDERDALE LAKES, Fla. -- A Lauderdale Lakes man is facing charges of sexual battery against a child, and the child claims his own mother videotaped at least one of the assaults.
The alleged victim's mother has been in jail since October 2004 on unrelated charges but authorities say before she went to jail she might have known that her child had fallen victim to a sexual assault, allegedly by her boyfriend, 27-year-old Kevin Bynes.
Bynes is charged with five counts of sexual assault against a child under the age of 12.
A formal complaint issued March 31 prompted the sheriff's office to investigate.
"From what our investigators gathered from the young victim, some of his siblings and also an examination that took place at the sexual assault treatment center, they believe that the victim was sexually battered at least five times during the period in question," said Veda Coleman-Wright, a spokeswoman for Broward Sheriff's Office.
Detectives say Bynes was living with his girlfriend and her children in an apartment when the alleged abuse occurred between July 31 and Oct. 28, 2004.
Bynes is accused of having sex with the 8-year-old in the boy's bedroom five times during that period.
"Based on the victim and his sister, both of them tell us that their mother knew about the abuse and if that is the case, we find that very alarming," Coleman-Wright said.
In the police report, the victim stated that his mother witnessed her boyfriend, allegedly videotaped the incident and got rid of the tape.
"Our detectives are continuing to talk to people, collecting evidence and, yes, they will talk with the mother to see what she knew and when," Coleman-Wright said.
Bynes remains behind bars without bond.
The alleged victim and his siblings are staying with relatives.
