Second Annual National Race to Stop Child Sexual Abuse

An Estimated 1 in 6 Women and 1 in 8 Men are Victims

WASHINGTON -- Child sexual abuse (CSA) has reached epidemic proportions, and it affects us all -- children, adult survivors, and society. By most estimates, one in six women, and one in eight men in the U.S., experience sexual abuse as children. In fact, more than $94 billion a year is spent on CSA.

The societal ill can be prevented and treated with your help. On Sunday, April 10, Stop the Silence, Inc., in association with the Futures Group, a Constella company will hold the second annual "National Race to Stop the Silence: Stop Child Sexual Abuse."

The Race will increase awareness of this public health issue and help raise funds for local programs, including "Safe Shores -- the D.C. Children's Advocacy Center," and the Virginia chapter of "ChildHelp USA," which are direct beneficiaries of the program. All registration proceeds for the race will go to Safe Shores, which works with child victims of physical and sexual abuse. The race will start from Freedom Plaza at 15th and Pennsylvania Avenue at 9 a.m. in Washington, D.C. and includes an 8K run, a 5K run/walk, and a kids' 1K fun run.

Survivors of child sexual abuse are vastly over represented among certain populations, such as sex workers, those incarcerated, teen moms, drug abusers, and runaways. According to Dr. Pamela Pine, director of Stop the Silence and Health Communication Director at Futures Group, "Only one in nine to one in ten children ever report the abuse, some adults never report it if told, and that some true cases are not established due to legal or court processes."

Sharon Simone is aware of this situation first-hand. She is responsible for getting The Child Abuse Accountability Act passed after years of silence about childhood sexual, physical and emotional abuse experienced from her father, an FBI agent and nationally recognized child abuse expert.

Stop the Silence, Inc., is a non-profit organization working on comprehensively addressing the prevention and treatment of child sexual abuse. Futures Group promotes public health and social programs though innovative policy development and program implementation in developing countries and in the United States.
