Robbery suspect cites sexual abuse in seeking leniency

BOSTON -- A man charged with robbing two Boston banks is seeking leniency, citing past sexual abuse by a Catholic priest.

Paul Callahan is now 32. He says he was molested when he was an eleven-year-old altar boy, and soon after, he began drinking, using drugs and committing crimes.

At the time of the crime, Callahan had 83-thousand-dollars in the bank, most of it from a settlement with the Archdiocese of Boston.

Callahan's lawyer says his client's real motive might not have been money but to prove he was `a man of strength."

The priest who Callahan says abused him has served time for indecent assault of a child.

The defense is seeking some prison time, along with treatment and probation. The prosecution says it will consider the request in its sentencing recommendation but it's unlikely they'll seek life, which is possible, given Callahan's previous record.
