Woman handed 65 year prison term in child abuse case
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — A 52-year-old grandmother convicted of failing to protect her children and grandchildren from repeated sexual assault over a 27-year period was sentenced to 65 years in prison.
At Thursday's sentencing hearing, Circuit Judge Johnny Hardwick said it was one the worse cases of incest and child abuse he'd ever seen or read.
The lengthy prison term was handed to 52-year-old Wanda Dison. Earlier this month, she was found guilty on seven counts of first-degree rape, sodomy, sexual abuse of a child and failing to protect and provide medical treatment for a child.
Prosecutors said Wanda Dison did nothing to stop the abuse and even participated in a scheme to help 57-year-old Calvin Collidge Dison sexually abuse their children and grandchildren. He was convicted in May on similar charges and was sentenced to 55 years in prison.
Hardwick said he decided Wanda Dison deserved the harsher sentence because -- quote -- "it's the mother's duty to protect her children."
