Testimony will begin abuse trial

By Elizabeth Ridenour -- Phoenix Staff Writer

Testimony will begin today in a trial for a Keefeton mother accused of permitting abuse and failing to report the repeated rape of one of her sons.

Jurors were selected Monday to hear the case of Alisha Mackey, 29. She is accused of knowing that her son had been sexually abused by her husband and others who were living in the same house. Opening statements are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. in Muskogee County District Court.

Mackey's husband, Jimmy Don Mackey, 32, pleaded guilty to first-degree rape of a child under 14 and was sentenced July 21 to 15 years in prison to be followed by 10 years of probation. He had been charged with 80 counts of sex-related charges as well as two for assault.

Additional charges against Alisha Mackey were filed Thursday claiming she knew of the sexual abuse of another of her sons and did nothing to stop it.

If convicted of permitting abuse, Mackey faces a fine of between $500 and $5,000, up to life in prison, or both. If convicted of failing to report child abuse, she faces up to $1,000 in fines, a year in prison or both.
