Man remains in jail in HIV transmission case

An Iowa City man who told police he is HIV-positive and has been charged with sexual abuse of a child remained in jail Tuesday.

Matt Powills, 41, of Iowa City is charged with second-degree sexual abuse and criminal transmission of HIV.

Powills is accused of touching the girl in her vaginal area, performing oral sex on her and forcing her to touch his genitals in incidents that occurred from August to Nov. 22, according to the criminal complaint made by Coralville police.

Police said Powills admitted he has HIV during the investigation, but authorities said they did not know whether the girl had contracted the virus.

Police said there was a no-contact order prohibiting Powills from associating with the girl.

He is being held in the Johnson County Jail in lieu of a $65,000 bond.

HIV is the virus that causes AIDS.
