Child Abuse

Experts say child abuse is a growing problem, responsible for more than 1,400 deaths every year.

Whether it`s physical, sexual, emotional or verbal abuse...Health and Human Services reports show abuse among boys has grown to one in every eight...for girls the rate is one in five, but numbers could be higher as many cases go unreported.

Phyllis Still of the YWCA helps first graders at Eugene Field Elementary learn the difference between appropriate and in-appropriate touching and what they should do if they feel uncomfortable.

The kids in class recite "say no, get away, and tell somebody!" as the three steps to take when feeling uncomfortable.

And according to Still, "It`s to empower a child and to inform them and keep in front of them that they are someone special, the have a right to be safe, to be protected and to help them recognize potentially dangerous situations. And to empower them to know they can do something to protect themselves, who to go to for help and to let them know if something happens, it`s not their fault."

Still says her presentation has given a number of children the courage to come forward about a bad situation they have faced.
