Alleged Abuse Detailed

Warrant Outlines Case Vs. Church Organist

NAUGATUCK, CT. -- A church organist accused of sexually abusing four girls and paying them hundreds of dollars to take pornographic photos of each other and him, went to police when the mother of one of the girls began extorting money from him, according to an arrest warrant made public this week.

Robert A. Nelson's relationship with the girls began in 2000, when he gave the girls a ride home from Immanuel St. James Episcopal Church in Derby, where he worked as an organist, according to the warrant.

Over a four-year period, Nelson bought the girls, one of whom was 10 in 2001, clothes and shoes and gave them wine coolers and strawberry daiquiris while he took pornographic Polaroids of them in his condominium bedroom on Mallane Lane in Naugatuck, the warrant says.

On Memorial Day 2003, the warrant states, Nelson took two of the girls into his bedroom, where they all took pornographic photos of each other.

"I told [the girls] the reason I had them take pictures of me was for a swingers magazine and they wanted nude photos," the warrant states.

They also engaged in sexual conversation, the document says. And Nelson said he paid the girls $500 for the photo session.

Nelson had the girls perform sexual acts on him in his car in the parking lots of Derby High School and Ansonia Middle School, according to the warrant.

Nelson, 50, was arrested Nov. 19 and pleaded not guilty to five counts of sexual assault, employing a minor in an obscene performance, possession of child pornography, providing alcohol to minors and risk of injury to a minor.

On Tuesday, a Superior Court judge in Waterbury made the 20-page affidavit public after the girls' names and ages were redacted to protect their identity.

Nelson went to the police Nov. 12 after the mother of one of the girls demanded money from him, according to the affidavit.

The mother admitted to police that she took $17,000 from Nelson with the promise of destroying an audio tape recording of sexual acts with the girls that she found under Nelson's bed and pornographic pictures of her daughter and her daughter's friend, according to the warrant. The mother said she found the pictures in her daughter's bedroom dresser drawer, according to the warrant.

On Nov. 13, Nelson worked with police to set up a sting operation against the mother to investigate his claim of extortion. Outfitted with a recording device, Nelson met the mother outside the Party Time Package Store in Ansonia.

The mother, who is not identified in the affidavit, was charged with extortion.

"He would do things with my kids that I couldn't afford to do, like take them to the carnival. ... I didn't know at the time why Bob was giving my daughter money," the mother told police.

Nelson was convicted in 1990 and 1991 in separate cases involving risk of injury to a minor.
