Child Abuse In the Tri-Cities

tricities.com

News of the alleged multiple sexual assaults against a young girl sent shock waves of fear through this Jonesborough neighborhood early this morning.

“Wow that's scary that's really scary”, says one neighbor.

“You almost made my heart stop it scares me it really scares me”, says another neighbor.

Washington County Sheriff's Department says it had enough probable cause to arrest Doug Duncan for multiple sexual assaults against a child under the age of thirteen. Neighbors say they already knew of one sex offender living in the neighborhood but the possibility of another is almost too much to bear.

“I am an Old Testament person I believe you do something wrong the same thing should happen to you”, says Laurie Fideli.

The charges against Duncan are just allegations at this point. But the fact remains, every day one hundred children, are reported abused in Tennessee. One part of the Tri-cities has the dubious honor of having the worst record in the state of Virginia.

“ Actually in 2001 Bristol Virginia had the highest founded rate of abuse and neglect in the entire state that is an alarming statistic”, says Kathi Roark, a children’s advocate.

And while the Jonesborough neighbors struggle to cope with today's allegations, experts say its up to all of us to face these staggering statistics.

“This is our community's problem not a problem of one family or one child”, says Kathi Roark.

Children advocacy centers say unless people are willing to stand up and inform authorities of child abuse, the cycle will never be broken.
