Band director indicted on three criminal counts
by Courtney Burns -- Staff Writer -- gazette.net
Kevin Owens Davenport, former band director for Charles Herbert Flowers High School in Springdale, was indicted on three criminal counts.
Davenport, 42, was charged Thursday with two counts of child abuse and one count of second degree assault, involving two 16-year-old girls who were his students.
In the child abuse indictment, the Grand Jury citing the State of Maryland for the body of Prince George’s County noted that between Feb. 14 and Oct. 24, 2003, Kevin Owens Davenport had the responsibility for the supervision of a minor under the age of 18 whom he sexually abused.
The second-degree assault indictment states that Kevin between Sept. 1 and Nov. 10, 2003, Owens Davenport assaulted the girl in the second degree.
Davenport was charged with two counts of sexual abuse of a minor on June 25, but the third count of second degree assault has since been added.
While Davenport was scheduled to have a preliminary hearing today at the District Court of Maryland for Prince George’s County, in Upper Marlboro, the decision to indict was made yesterday and the case will now go to circuit court.
"The arraignment is set in the circuit court," said Renee Battle-Brooks chief of child abuse and sexual assault unit for the State’s Attorney for Prince George’s County. "It will probably be in the next few weeks."
But the case will probably not get to court until January, Battle-Brooks added.
