Leamington man in court accused of child abuse
28 September 2004
Leamington man Jonathan Scarcliffe appeared in court in Monday accused of sexually abusing children.
The 36-year-old Kennedy Square resident faced a string of charges of assaulting boys, including two counts of detaining a child, two of causing a child under 13 to take part in prostitution or pornography, one of adult sexual activity with a boy under 13 and one of gross indecency with a boy under 16.
Wearing a grey t-shirt and blue jeans and sporting an earring and cropped dark hair, Scarcliffe spoke only to confirm his name and sat pensively with his hands clasped as magistrates and solicitors discussed the case.
David Bell, 43, of Morris Street, Chester-le-Street, County Durham, appeared in the dock alongside Scarcliffe. Bell was accused of sexual activity with a boy under 13 and causing a child under 13 to become involved with prostitution or pornography. Both defendants were handcuffed to probation officers throughout the ten-minute hearing before magistrates in Leamington.
The pair were arrested following a joint investigation between UK police and the FBI in the USA into child abuse and making and distributing indecent pictures of children on the internet.
The case was adjourned until October 22. Both men have been remanded in custody.
