Sexual abuse suspect free on $30,000 bond

By Casey Santee - Journal Writer

POCATELLO - A local man accused of molesting three teenage girls is free on bond.

Chubbuck resident Christopher M. Nalley, 30, was arrested Aug. 6 and charged with three counts of lewd conduct with a minor.

He was taken to Bannock County jail and was released three days later after posting $30,000 bond.

Nalley made his initial court appearance Aug. 9. His preliminary hearing is scheduled Aug. 23 in Magistrate Judge Rob Naftz's courtroom.

Maximum punishment if he is convicted could be up to life in prison and a $50,000 fine on each charge.

Although few details are available, the first incident reportedly occurred about four years ago. All three girls were 13 years old when the alleged abuse occurred.

Bannock County Deputy Prosecutor Shawn Traini said the best advice for anyone who suspects a child has been sexually abused is to report it to authorities immediately.

"We have an excellent Department of Health and Welfare that works well with police and prosecutors to investigate child abuse," Traini said. "Any person who believes a child has been molested should contact them."

One way for parents to protect their children is to simply talk to them.

"Good, open communication is important," Traini said. "Talk to your children about what's appropriate and what isn't. Also, if something does happen, they will feel comfortable talking to you."
