10-year-old girl was in foster care at Bear residence

A 61-year-old Bear man surrendered to county police after authorities learned he allegedly had sexually assaulted a 10-year-old foster child in his care three years ago, police said Tuesday.
Gerald Salley, of the 700 block of Staghorn Drive, was charged Friday with three counts of first-degree attempted rape, three counts of second-degree rape, three counts of unlawful sexual contact and one count of continuous sexual abuse of a child.
County police spokesman Cpl. Trinidad Navarro said the victim, who is now 15, came forward with the allegations a few weeks ago. She has not lived with the suspect for two years.
Salley was sent to Young Correctional Institution after failing to post $93,000 bail.
The victim said Salley sexually assaulted her when she was 10 and continued to do so from Jan. 1, 1999 to Dec. 31, 2001, police said.
Salley's residence at the time was a contracted foster home with the state, said state Family Services spokesman Joe Smack. When the allegations were made May 18, the other children were removed from the home, he said.
Smack said the victim who reported the sexual assaults now lives with her parents out of state and has no further contact with the suspect.
Family Services is continuing its investigation into the foster-care home, Smack said.
"At this point we're unsure if there are other victims," he said.
