5 accused in connection with rape of 5-year-old

ROWAN COUNTY

CLEVELAND -- Five people have been charged in connection with the rape of a 5-year-old Cleveland girl, the Rowan County Sheriff's Department said. The Observer is withholding the names of the suspects to protect the victim.A 31-year-old man was charged with first-degree rape of a child, attempted first-degree sexual offense, first-degree sexual offense, indecent liberties with a child, assault with a deadly weapon and felony child abuse inflicting serious injury. He was in the Rowan County jail on a $500,000 bond.

A 22-year-old woman was charged with three counts of felony child abuse and one count of failure to report child abuse. She was in jail on a $20,000 bond.

In addition, three other people -- a 25-year-old man, a 79-year-old man and a 64-year-old woman -- each were charged with one count of failure to report abuse, a misdemeanor. The 79-year-old man was allowed a written promise to appear in court, and the other two had their bonds set at $2,000 each.

The abuse occurred over a period of months, said Maj. Tim Bost with the Sheriff's Department. He said there may be additional charges.

The girl is in the custody of the Rowan Department of Social Services. -- Gail Smith-Arrants
