About - Adult Stem Cells
I wish the Media would have some better coverage of just how the research and application is coming here in the United States. To follow this story - you will see - on the right column of this page - the area called "About".
"About the Book - My Autobiography" is listed first. And I have made links to the discussion of Heart Transplant and Adult Stem Cells.
You see - the discussions in this Weblog will be of those two items - intertwined into my book discussion and my life - because now for me - it is critical for me to complete this Book and continue with this Blog. So rather than create a new Weblog - I'll write here.
I first learned of Adult Stem Cells in the fall of 2003. This was 6 months after my diagnosis of having Congestive Heart Failure.
I read this first:
"Stem Cell Therapy Helps Heal Damaged Heart"
This article is on a great website called: Health Day -formerly - HealthScoutNews.com
Now if you search on Google for: adult stem cells
You'll come up with a lot of results - some going back to 2001 - which I'm interested in now as well. One specifically - click here
Now - this year should be a great year for the discussion of Stem Cells - not to be confused with Adult Stem Cells - and this month I think the topic of Stem Cells in general - will peak -at the Democratic National Convention - when former President Reagan's son - Ronald Reagan, Jr. - speaks - to address stem cell research - sometime during July 26-29th, 2004.
This is what I meant by - that I wish the Media could find some more info on Adult Stem Cell applications here in the U.S. because of these points:
"There is a body of research suggesting that stem cells taken from adult bone marrow could be as effective at regenerating damaged organs as those taken from an embryo or fetus. If so, the huge controversy over the ethical implications of using fetal or embryonic cells could be moot."
And - "the use of embryonic or fetal stem cells to regenerate damaged organs."
So you see - I read another article: "Stem Cells Stem Heart Damage"Study finds injections improved function in those with severe congestive heart failure.
Now - by accident I discovered this great article in a magazine - that I found in June 2004 - at - of all places - my Doctors office - my first visit to my Internist [my primary care physician].
In "BusinessWeek" -- May 24, 2004 - on the cover.
Biotech Frontier - Can Research in Stem Cells and other advanced techniques heal ailing hearts and brains? by Arlene Weintraub
Now - Adult Stem Cells hits the news again - July 8th, 2004 - big news at CNN and Yahoo
It is just rehashing the same old news - "Adult Stem Cells taken from bone marrow can improve heart function."
What is going on - and what is the real story of Adult Stem Cell Injections?
If you have any resources and/or feedback on what is the latest in medical news on this subject - please post it here. Thanks
Research on embryonic stem cells is limited because of President Bush's decision in August 2001 to only allow federal funding for research on stem cells derived from embryos that had already been destroyed. Most researchers depend, at least in part, on federal funding.
